FAB MS with NMR analysis identified that M. voltae is a unique species that produce both sn-2 and sn-3 hydroxydiethers. Methanosarcina spp. contain high proportion of hydroxydieters, exceeding 70 % in this study. Methanothrix soehngenii (formerly Methanosaeta concilii) is a reference.
